About Us

We are a fun and friendly club that has been going strong for over 30 years, bringing people together to enjoy a game of badminton.

Wellington Badminton Club courts

We currently have around 45 members with a range of standards from individuals who haven’t played in years, to current or ex county players, and of all ages. We are always on the look out for new members and want to encourage as many people to get involved in the future of the sport and be a part of Wellington Badminton Club.

We play a good social and competitive level of men’s, women’s and mixed doubles from intermediate to advanced level with teams in various divisions in the Aldershot and Camberley District Badminton League.

Please find our frequently asked questions below to help you decide if we are the right club for you or get in contact with us to try out the club.

Frequently asked questions

Where and when do we play?

We play on Wednesday evenings all year round from 7:30pm to 10pm. We do lose the occasional evening if Christmas or New Year fall around a Wednesday or if the college are using the hall (this is very rare).

We can be found at the Wellington Health and Fitness Club which is in the grounds of Wellington College. There are shower facilities and a great sports bar where we tend to socialise after club night. The badminton is played in an excellent sports hall which houses eight courts – we normally have at least four courts throughout the season for club use. If there is a home match, this is played across two courts (but the club night players will still have four courts).

What standard do you play?

Our intermediate level assumes you have previous experience playing badminton in a club or league environment and have a good foundation of both technical ability and tactical knowledge of the game. But don’t worry: if you are unsure of your level or haven’t played in a while, we would still encourage you to come along and try us out and we can see if we are the right club for each other.

Unfortunately we do not accept beginners.

How much is the club membership?

Members pay monthly, which covers courts, shuttles and affiliation to the local leagues and Badminton England. We currently charge an additional £4 for each home and away match you play in a league.

What are clubs rules and regulations?

We try to keep things relatively informal, but as you would expect, we have a committee, a constitution and a safeguarding policy (as we welcome members who are under 18).

We operate a ‘peg’ system for picking matches during the club night and this provides members with a variety of games throughout the evening.

Do you play singles and doubles?

We usually only play doubles, both level and mixed. If you want to play predominantly singles, then we are probably not the club for you. However, if you want to play the odd singles game towards the end of a club night when the courts are less busy, that is fine.

What shuttles do you use?

We currently use Babolat hybrid shuttles.

Can I come along to try out the club?

We know it’s difficult to tell how your standard might fit within a club (and whether you would enjoy playing in the club). For that reason, we normally suggest that you get in contact with us and we will arrange for you to come along for up to three club nights to check how well it works.

We charge a guest fee of £7 for each club night you attend. We have a card machine, so can take payment on the night. If you would like to come along, please get in touch with us via the contact page.
